Robert Ricard, Aspectos de Galdós, pp. 8-11, speculates that Gloria precedes Doña Perfecta and dates from 1874. He is of course talking of the published version of the novel. But Galdós ended his final manuscript of the Primera Parte with the words «Terminado en Nov. del 1876». The printer added on the back of the same sheet «7 de dic. 76». Furthermore, two pages of the final manuscript are on the back of Ateneo receipts for dues, and these documents bear the dates «1.º de julio, 1876» and «1.º de noviembre de 1876».
