For purposes of comparison, readers may care to look at Clifford Leech, «On Editing One's First Play», SB, 23 (1970), 61-70. Those who wish to pursue comparisons further should read Fredson Bowers, «Today's Shakespeare Texts, and Tomorrow's», SB, 19 (1966), 39-65. Being twenty years old (delivered in 1964), this lecture is no longer a complete reflection of the state of Shakespearean textual scholarship; but editors of Spanish Golden-Age drama will find that in many areas their discipline still lags behind the Shakespearean scholarships of 1964. For some recent views on old spelling, see Play-texts in Old Spelling: Papers from the Glendon Conference, ed. R. C. Shady and G. B. Shand (London, 1983).
