Project and team

AWESOME is made up of seven members from different scientific disciplines at various stages of their careers. The team members come from four different national institutions (University of Alicante, Pablo de Olavide University, Pompeu Fabra University, and Complutense University of Madrid). The project's principal investigator, Sara Prieto, along with three other group members (Alberto Egea, UPO; Pere Gifra, UPF; Remedios Perni, UA), are specialists in the study of English-language literature and together they have a significant number of publications on North American literature, travel literature, literary analysis from a gender perspective, and the relationships between literature and visual culture. María Pilar Escobar belongs to the Department of Computer Languages and Systems at UA and works at the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library, where she has collaborated on various projects related to Digital Humanities. The team is completed by Margarita Capdepón from the Department of Regional Geographic Analysis and Physical Geography, also at UA and Raúl Travé from the Department of Social Anthropology and Social Psychology at UCM.

Sara Prieto

Sara Prieto is an Associate Professor in the English Department and a member of the Research Institute in Gender Studies at the University of Alicante (UA). She is also a member of the THALiS research group. She earned her degree in English Studies from the University of Oviedo and completed her doctoral thesis as an FPI grantee from the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness in the Department of English Studies (2009-2013). She has conducted research stays at the University of Cambridge and the Schlesinger Library at Harvard University, and has taught at the State University of New York and the Catholic University of Murcia.

Sara has mean the principal investigator of the ATLAS project: American Travel Literature About Spain, funded by the Research and Transfer Office at the University of Alicante (GRE 18-14). Currently, she is the principal investigator for the AWESOME project: American Women Exploring Spain – Open Multimedia Encounters, funded by the Regional Council (CIGE 2022-016). She holds two six-year research periods and is the author of Reporting the First World War in the Liminal Zone: British and American Eyewitness Accounts from the Western Front (Palgrave Macmillan 2018). Additionally, she has published in numerous collective volumes and journals such as First World War Studies, Women’s Writing and ANGLICA.

Alberto Egea

Alberto Egea Fernández-Montesinos is an associate professor (profesor titular) in the area of English Studies in the Department of Philology and Translation at Universidad Pablo Olavide in Seville. He holds three sexenios from the Ministry of Education: two in research and one in transfer of knowledge. Dr. Egea has an ample experience of over 34 years in both research and teaching in various public and private universities in the United States and Spain. His research reflects on the social impact of the study of the image of nations in the development of their economies, specifically on the image of Spain in literary representations by American writers during the last two centuries. He has published and lectured on travel literature and the Image of Spain, American women writers, and cultural studies in various universities in Britain, the United States, Australia, Brazil, Cuba, France, and Spain. He has published over 50 works, including monographs, articles and book chapters, and has curated various exhibitions both, onsite and online, on the topic of the image of Andalusia and Spain.

Pere Gifra

Pere Gifra-Adroher is an associate professor (profesor titular) in the area of English Studies in the Department of Humanities at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. He obtained his doctorate degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Chapaign in 1995 and ever since his chief areas of research have revolved around two axes: Anglophone travel writings on the Iberian Peninsula and cultural and literary relations between the United States, Catalonia, and Spain. In the first area, he has published the monograph Between History and Romance: Travel Writing on Spain in the Antebellum United States (2000) and has edited a special issue of the Revista de Filología de la Universidad de La Laguna on American travellers in Spain. Likewise, in other studies and editions he has paid attention to specific authors (Bayard Taylor, Octavia Walton LeVert, Hannah Lynch, Elizabeth R. Pennell, etc.), in addition to carrying out an extensive outreach work through the dissemination of texts in a section on travelers in the periodical Catalonia Today. In the second area, he has conducted studies on the reception of the work of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Mark Twain and Charles B. Brown in Spain. He has been principal investigator (PI) in some projects on travel writing funded by the Catalan autonomous government, as well as member of other state-funded projects devoted to comparative literature.

Remedios Perni

Remedios Perni is an Associate Professor in the Department of English Philology and a member of the University Institute for Gender Studies and the THALiS research group at the University of Alicante. She holds a degree in English Philology and History of Art from the University of Murcia. She obtained her PhD in English Philology in 2014, receiving the Extraordinary Doctorate Award in 2016 for her interdisciplinary Ph.D. thesis examining the connections between the work of William Shakespeare and contemporary visual culture, specifically focusing on the survival of the iconography of the character Ophelia in visual arts in the 21st century. Perni has conducted research stays at the Centre Dona i Literatura at the University of Barcelona, King’s College London, Royal Holloway University of London, and New York University, among other institutions. The results of Perni’s research have been published in journals such as Shakespeare Quarterly, SEDERI Yearbook, Arte y políticas de identidad, and Literatura: historia, teoría y crítica. Her contributions can also be found in essay collections such as The Afterlife of Ophelia (ed. Palgrave, 2012) and The Routledge Companion to Contemporary European Theatre and Performance (Routledge, 2023). She is the author of the monograph Ophelia en la cultura visual: memoria y melancolía (Comares, 2024) and the editor of Shakespeare’s First Folio Revisited: Quadricentennial Essays (Ediciones Universidad de Salamanca, 2023). Perni is the Principal Investigator of the project Poéticas del Activismo: interseccionalidades literarias y culturales en lengua inglesa en el mundo contemporáneo (2019-2021) and, along with Juan José Bermúdez de Castro, is the Principal Investigator of the I+D Project Shakespeare, Art and Activism in the 21st Century (SHAKE-ART 21), funded by the MICCIN (2023-2026).

María Pilar Escobar

María Pilar Escobar works at Center for Digital Humanities Biblioteca Virtual Miguel de Cervantes and she is part-time teacher at the University of Alicante, Department of Software and Computing Systems. In addition, he is a member of the Lucentia research group and the University Institute for Computer Research.

PhD in computer science from the University of Alicante, she has recently authored several research articles in the most relevant journal regarding digital libraries, linked open data, ontologies and data modelling, such as Semantic Web Journal as well as the application of Natural Language Processing techniques and Collections as Data in the Journal of Information Science. She has also published several research papers regarding the USA initiative Collections as Data to promote the computational access to digital collections from GLAM institutions. She also participated in the establishment of the BVMC Labs to foster the reuse of digital collections in innovative and creative ways.

Margarita Capdepón

Margarita Capdepón is PhD in Tourism (International Mention), Bachelor Degree in Geography (with Honors) and Diploma in Tourism (2001), as well as two Master’s Degree.

Her main lines of research are the analysis of relationships between tourism and natural protected areas, private conservation, territorial planning and management of tourist destinations. She has participated in several competitive projects and research contracts. She has several publications in indexed journals, book chapters and contributions to national and international conferences, both in Geography and Tourism. He has also carried out several reversal research interships (pre- and post-doctoral) at universities in the United Kingdom and is member of several research groups and centres at the University of Alicante.

As a lecturer, she worked at the Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM) (2014 and 2021). Since September 2021 she holds a position as Lecturer [Profesor Ayudante Doctor] at the Department of Regional Geographical Analysis and Physical Geography at the University of Alicante. She teaches several subjects in the Degrees of Tourism and Geography and Spatial Planning, as well as in the Master's Degree in Development Cooperation.

Raúl Travé UCM (Universidad Complutense de Madrid). Biodata

Raúl Travé

Raúl Travé Molero is a lecturer in the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology at the UCM. He holds a PhD in anthropology applied to social development from the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (2015), a degree in journalism from the Complutense University of Madrid (2005) and a degree in social and cultural anthropology from the UMH (2008).

He has been a visiting researcher at the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). His research work deals with processes of heritage, communication and creation of hegemony, as well as the effects of touristification on local communities. He is a member of the research group CULTURDES-UMH (Culture, Tourism and [cooperation for] Development).
